The truth is, I was not expecting much from Menotti, having been raised with minimal opera contact and having found my way to it through the melodic pathways of Rossini and Puccini and those guys. My feeling about Menotti was "not melodic; nothing you can hum on your way to the parking lot." Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All day yesterday (and I mean like thirty or forty times!) I found myself "la-la-ing" the Lullaby from The Consul, and wishing I could remember the whole melody line and knew the words. And bits of Magda's aria and "O lips say goodbye" keep popping into my mind. Like Elly and Nina said at the SRJC preview : This is wonderful stuff! Cinnabar has done it again - come up with an incredibly talented cast.
